Chapter 17

Flynn arrived home that night and let himself into a silent, empty house. He wasn’t a man prone to loneliness, as let’s face it when you were a police officer there weren’t exactly people queuing up to be your friend. Particularly if your colleagues didn’t like you, then you were sunk. Anyway, Flynn had never had time for the trouble and turmoil friends could bring with them. Not being a man who understood emotion, he just didn’t ‘gel’ with most people. But still, he thought, as he turned on lights, being alone most of the time tended to grate occasionally.

Going through to the kitchen, he spied a flash of white out of the window. What is it now, he thought crossly? What’s with this interloper? Walking to the back door, he unlocked it and flung it open with a flourish but couldn’t see anything in the gloom of the garden. Then he looked down. And there he was. A little white dog, who barked in greeting and walked through Flynn’s legs into the kitchen. Flynn turned and stared in astonishment. Was he going mad, or was there really a little white dog sat on his kitchen floor looking for all the world like he lived there? The dog barked once more and then had the temerity to lie down!

‘Go on, shoo,’ said Flynn walking towards it and flapping his hands. But that didn’t work as the dog just lay there calmly looking at him.

He must be lost, thought Flynn. Perhaps a nearby family are already distraught at the thought of yet another night without man’s best friend. That was something Flynn knew about, having dealt with lost pets for years on the force. For some reason everyone at his previous stations had thought it great fun to give Flynn the missing pet cases and he’d sat across from many a crying child and his or her parent.

That meant that Flynn couldn’t just turf the dog out into the night. He had a duty as a police officer to keep the pet safe until the morning, so he could be returned to his rightful owners. Sighing, he closed the back door and went about making his evening meal, under the watchful eye of his new friend. Luckily, sausages were on the menu, and as Flynn had no dog food, the two of them shared the local butcher’s best bangers, accompanied by mash and beans.

‘I wonder what your name is,’ Flynn said as he wiped the last of his bean juice up with a piece of bread. Once he’d popped it into his mouth, he got down on his knees and examined the little dog’s collar. There was no name disc on it, but he got a good number of licks for his trouble. Oh well, it had been worth a try.

Moving into the tiny front room, Flynn turned on the television to watch the evening news. The dog followed him and jumped on the settee, promptly snuggling into Flynn. Well, that was going a bit far, Flynn thought and pushed the dog off.
